"You can't teach the poetry, but you can teach the craft."
- David Hockney

“I want to create images that are a shorthand of sensation,” - Francis Bacon

Everything is a mystery, ourselves, and all things both simple and humble. A half dozen pictures would just about be enough for the life of an artist, for my life. - Giorgio Morandi

I want to create an atmosphere that can be consciously plumbed with seeing... like the wordless thought that comes from looking in a fire. - James Turell

"What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn't be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought." - David Hockney

I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for. - Georgia O'Keeffe

To move the picture into our surroundings and give it real existence has been my ideal since I came to abstract painting. - Piet Mondriaan

I wanted to write about looking at the world, so it's more about helping people, or persuading people, to see what is around us; both the marvellous and the terrible. - John Berger

The world is wide. No two days are alike, nor even two hours, neither were there ever two leaves of a tree alike since the creation of all the world; and the genuine productions of art, like those of nature, are all distinct from each other.
